According to their national associations, school mental health staff include school psychologists, school counselors, school social workers, and school nurses. It is important that school mental health staff work collaboratively to create a seamless system of support for students experiencing thoughts of suicide, from triage to support. An effective system allows students to be identified, assessed for risk, and then referred to treatment based on severity. This website lists resources for school mental health staff to build their capacity in working with high-risk students.
The videos and resources provided on this webpage are meant to support the LEAs of the Los Angeles County Office of Education that have completed the basic SPORT training. The "General Guidelines for Teachers and Staff" were developed to help your district or school crisis team intervene with suicidal or self-injurous youth.
The tools in this section will provide guidance to teachers/staff when a student at risk for suicide is identified. The goal is to help educators recognize the signs of a struggling student and to know how to proceed once you have identified that a student is at risk.
A descriptive list of resources for suicide prevention, mental health, bullying, and media resources are shared with parents/family to support them with a critical role as gatekeepers in youth suicide prevention.
