The Suicide Prevention Ongoing Resiliency Training (SPORT) Project started in 2012 through the Region 12 Student Mental Health Initiative funded through the Mental Health Services Act 2004 (Proposition 63). This initiative builds on local strategies and activities statewide related to prevention of student mental health issues at the elementary level (K-8), with linkages to grades 9 through 12.

Stephanie Murray, MA, PPS, LEP, has been a practicing school psychologist for over 30 years, working at the Whittier Union High School District throughout her career. She has been active in suicide prevention for over 25 years and is currently serving as co-chair for the Los Angeles Child and Adolescent Suicide Review Team. Stephanie is also the co-chair of the youth and schools workgroup for the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Network and the Mental Wellness Committee for the California Association of School Psychologists. In addition, Stephanie has partnered with others in her school district to develop a comprehensive suicide prevention practice to the district, to ensure that all schools in the district utilized and provided a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention and provided trainings to those in her district and other school districts regarding this approach and implementation.

Kimberli Breen, MS, CAS, MA, is a National Behavior Change Agent affiliated with the University of Kansas SWIFT Center, KOI Education and Affecting Behavior Change. She supports school, district, county, and state teams across the United States with training and coaching in the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework. She is most known for her virtual coaching model and emphasis on integrating initiatives, including Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), and Family/School/Community Partnerships.
The California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA) serves as the statewide organization of California’s 58 County Superintendents of Schools and has established 11 service regions to implement new education programs effectively. The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) comprises Region 11. CCSESA was awarded funding, supplied by the voter approved Mental Health Services Act (Proposition 63) and administered the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA), to coordinate the Regional K-12 Student Mental Health Initiative. This initiative builds on local strategies and activities statewide related to prevention of student mental health issues at the elementary level (K-8), with linkages to grades 9 through 12.
The County Superintendents of Schools are positioned to build upon existing student mental health programs and implement the work of the Initiative regionally.
